Brew Monday: Swap Blue Monday for Connection at Fire Up Rochdale

Brew Monday: Swap Blue Monday for Connection at Fire Up Rochdale News / By Fire Up / 14th January 2026

The third Monday in January is sometimes referred to as ‘Blue Monday’ because it is supposed to be the hardest day of the year, following the festive break come-down, cold weather, and the long wait until the next payday. However, the Samaritans have coined a term for the day, renaming it ‘Brew Monday’, noting that we can all have good days and bad days, and that these aren’t determined by the calendar.

Brew Monday is all about encouraging people to reach out to family, friends, colleagues, or loved ones and connect over a drink. It doesn’t have to be on a Monday, and it doesn’t matter if you choose tea, coffee, a smoothie, or juice. What matters most is taking time to connect and check in with others.

Once someone starts opening up to you, it is important to listen to what they have to say. Samaritans have created a guide called SHUSH with active-listening tips, and they also share their top tips for encouraging someone to open up.

So rather than thinking of this Monday as ‘blue’, try reaching out to a friend, family member, colleague, or loved one for a brew. It’s a simple way to brighten both your day and theirs.

If you’re looking for a place to share a brew and connect, we’re offering a free coworking day for new customers to Fire Up this Brew Monday on 19th January.
